An Approach to Making A Poetry Film

In this section James Knight looks at a poem by Caleb Parkin, ‘The Desktop Metaphor’, to suggest how (or how not to!) approach making a poetry film.

Take a look at this video …

What did you think of this? Yes, terrible!

It illustrated at least eleven things from the poem. It included wobbly camera footage, loud music (from The Terminators), lines were stumbled over, there was a cough and there were watermarked stock images.

There are very many ways that this poem could have been approached better. In this next video, James Knight takes us through one of those approaches …

The result? A fabulous poetry film by James Knight, for ‘The Desktop Metaphor’ by Caleb Parkin …

Thank you to Caleb Parkin for the use of ‘The Desktop Metaphor’, and to James Knight for his insight and videos. Caleb Parkin won second place in the National Poetry Competition 2016, for ‘The Desktop Metaphor’.
